The introduction of a new text in cell biology needs little defense, for no single literary source can do justice to the cell. Several textbooks are now available on the subjec, each with its owen coverage and character. In addition, there are thousands of monographs dealing with various aspects of cell structure and function. In writing this text I have sought to condense a very complex and diversified field into a book that is easy to read and clearly facused. The central theme is the structur and function of the cell and its organelles.
